(1)The History of Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles have a history as long as that of the internal-$combustion engine vehicles. The lead-acid batteries were invented in 1895, while the electric motors had existed before 1834.Electric vehicles came into being in the 1970s. In 1873, Robert Davidson, an Englishman, successfully developed the first battery-driven electric car, which had its practical values, starting a prelude to human-made electric vehicles. The number of electric vehicles is still considerable until early 20th century. In New York, Boston, Chicago and other big cities, about 1/3 of the vehicles were driven by electricity, in 1904, among which there were not only cars, but also vans. In 1915, another large number of electric cars started moving.

In the 21st century, the decisive factor of development of vehicles is still environmental protection. Although internal-combustion engine vehicles have made great improvement in environmental protection, energy conservation and other areas, and have achieved outstanding successes, but they are still polluting the environment, which can't meet the requirements of the 21st- century mankind. As the world's petroleum resources are gradually disappearing, and that competitions about it are unusually fierce, oil prices often fluctuate greatly. China is not rich in oil resources.
Global possessions of vehicles fueled with gasoline and diesel have increased a lot. If we did not carry out researches and development of alternative energy sources as soon as possible, the earth's limited oil resources will be exhausted in a short term because of over-exploitation. Moreover, harms caused by internal-combustion engine vehicles are shocking; the air pollution does great harm to human health, and also damages crops, livestock, buildings, forests and other natural ecosystems. According to statistics, seven of the ten most polluted cities are in China. 70% of China's urban pollution is caused by automobile exhaust emissions. China's auto industry is in a period of rapid development. In order to protect the environment, on the one hand, we have to improve and intensify the implementation of strict emission pollution control regulations, and to supervise automobile plants to reduce emissions and pollution; on the other hand, they should be encouraged to explore new ways to produce pollution-free and low-noise vehicles. Electric vehicles, adapting CVT systems, are easy to manipulate, and have effectively reduced frequent shifting operation in districts with heavy traffic. At the same time, they have also exempted drivers from complicated operations of adding cold water and fuel, changing lubricants, and other items, which have lowered the fatigue of the driver, and thus fulfill the goal of easy-driving. Electric cars, in the structure, have got rid of the largest source of noise-- internal-combustion engine. Therefore, they don't have a great noise source, basically; they are very quiet inside. They are easy to maintain and can save energy. Electric vehicles' energy consumption is provided by power plants.
Electric automobiles are one of the important fields in the world high-tech fields. Accelerated development of Economic globalization and high-tech has made the electric vehicle a synthesizer product based on development of automotive technology, electrochemistry, new materials, new energy, micro-electronics, computer, information, intelligent control. But there are great breakthroughs in high-energy batteries in recent years, among which the two most significant are lithium-ion battery and the fuel batteries. Once charged, the lithium-ion battery lasts for about 400km, with a lifespan of 1000 recharges, and it can be used continuously for 3-5 years, which is three times as long as the normal lead-acid batteries' lifespan. Fuel batteries have got significant progress: it adapts hydrogen oxidized by oxygen as a fuel, gives out electricity directly, and changes into water. It is a 'pollution-free'emissions.
The application of electric energy in the car has broad prospects. Electric vehicles are able to made effective use of energy, with the characteristics of little vibration, low noise, and zero emission. They are the most likely alternative to cars driven by fuel. The electric vehicle is the ultimate direction of the development of environmentally vehicles. At present all countries are stepping up the research and development. Electric car are in researches of a variety of trends; various kinds of raw materials to manufacture batteries have been tried in the loading test. But fuel cell, with an energy ratio as high as 33600W H/dg, is far advanced than any other kind of batteries.
